CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The U.S. electric grid enters the week of June 22, 2026, in the most consequential operational stretch of the summer: ERCOT is heading into peak demand season targeting a potential all-time record of 92,211 MW, four DOE Section 202(c) coal plant orders were renewed this month extending dispatchable backup through September, FERC delivered its most sweeping large-load interconnection action in the commission’s history on June 18, and the PJM 2028/29 Base Residual Auction is running this week — for the first time in three cycles without a price cap. The grid is entering the stress period that every reliability plan since 2025 identified as the critical test.

Estimated U.S. electrical output for the week ending June 13 (Week 24) reached approximately 80,200 GWh, up roughly 3.1% year-on-year as summer cooling demand overtook the spring shoulder season. Year-to-date output runs approximately 1,761,000 GWh, about 2.1% above the same period in 2025. South Central and Southeast regions continue to lead YoY growth — both AI data center and industrial hotspots. The June EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook projects summer 2026 electricity generation 3% above summer 2025, with the increase met almost entirely by renewables. Solar is up 19% over last summer in the mix. The problem is solar delivers roughly zero megawatts at 9 PM in Dallas when demand is still 90 GW.

FERC made history on June 18. In a unanimous action titled “Aggressive Targeted Action to Speed Large Load Integration,” the commission issued tailored show-cause orders under Section 206 of the Federal Power Act to all six regional grid operators — PJM, MISO, SPP, CAISO, ISO-NE, and NYISO — directing each to justify or reform tariffs governing how data centers and other large energy users connect to the grid. FERC chose a Section 206 show-cause approach rather than a standard NOPR specifically to be legally durable and fast. The implications for data center interconnection, cost allocation, and grid reliability modeling are material and immediate.
